Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

on Monday, June 1, 2009

The only full marathon in San Diego was designed to be entertaining for the participants and the spectators. Twenty-six stages planted across the course will feature 42 bands throughout the morning and into the afternoon.

The run is a people-watcher's dream. About 165,000 spectators typically watch the race, which begins on the west side of Balboa Park and meanders through downtown before cutting through Mission Valley and around Mission Bay. The race ends at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.

Some 40 cheerleading squads will be in costume and have themed floats as part of a local competition. But often it's the runners who amuse the observers. Event planner Kari Logan said the race often attracts several Running Elvises, and one year there was a runner who carried a surfboard the entire trip. Descriptions of some of the runners' outfits are better left out of a family newspaper.
