on Saturday, June 6, 2009

Neal WanlessA 23-year-old Todd County rancher whose family has fallen behind in their taxes and had a mobile home repossessed last year has claimed a $232.1 million Powerball jackpot.

Neal Wanless, who lives on his family's 320-acre ranch near Mission, bought the winning ticket in Winner late last month during a trip to buy livestock feed. He will take home $88.5 million in a lump sum payment after taxes are deducted.

Wanless says his family has been helped by their community and that he "intends to repay that help many times over." He says he plans to continue ranching, albeit on a larger ranch.

Lottery officials say he will get his money June 16th. He was given a $100 bill for a lesser prize he won on the same Powerball ticket.

Woman pulled in front of train by dog

A woman who died after the dog she was walking pulled her into the path of an Amtrak train was identified today as 32-year-old Vida Silver of Hayward.

Silver was walking a pit bull terrier on Blossom Way about a mile north of the Hayward station around 2:15 p.m. Thursday. The dog's owner, an 18-year-old man, rode a bicycle around the crossing arms as the train approached, said Alameda County sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson.

The dog apparently began following its owner and pulled the woman into the train's path, Nelson said. Silver had the leash wrapped around her hand in order to control the dog and was unable to let go, authorities said.

Both Silver and the dog died when they were hit by a Capitol Corridor train headed from Sacramento to San Jose, said Amtrak spokeswoman Vernaé Graham. Silver was identified today by the county coroner.

Her death came hours after a man jumped in front of a train near Grayson Street in Berkeley at 10:50 a.m., Graham said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released pending notification of his family.

Octomom Rips Kate’s Bikini Body

Nadya Suleman goes on a video tirade about Kate Gosselin’s vacation bikini pictures.

Suleman, who is trying to trademark the term “Octomom,” appeared in another video on RadarOnline.com.

This time, Suleman goes on rant about Gosselin using tummy-tuck to get in beach shape.

Suleman then rips up a set on Gosselin bikini pictures, throws them in a trash can and laughs.

On the surface, the latest mom antics seem juvenile. But Suleman has signed a TV deal with a European production company, and will be coming to cable TV in the near future.

The Gosselins empire is rumored to be worth as much as $10 million.

Suleman also said in the video that she shows "more intellectual and educational, not so superficial."

On Wednesday, Kate Gosselin was seen in public for the third day in a row in a bikini. There is no word on when she and her children will return from North Carolina.

Kate Gosselin on Bikini

Kate Gosselin hits the beach again in a new bikini, while husband Jon is nowhere to be seen.

Gosselin, 34, was in the black designer bikini at a North Carolina resort on Tuesday where she, hed kids and bodyguard Steve Neild have been since Memorial Day.

Jon Gosselin was spotted Monday on at ATV at the couple’s house near Reading, Pa.

But on Tuesday, US Weekly reported that Jon had been with his alleged girlfriend on March 28 in Utah, when Kate had her birthday party back East.

New episodes of “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” aired on Monday show the couple clearly apart one month before tabloid reports of affairs with other people.

The shows had Jon Gosselin in Park City, Utah when Kate Gosselin was home, while Jon stayed with the kids when Kate went on a book tour to San Diego.

“It looks like it's all about me,” Kate said at the start of the show, but she said that underneath, it “is all about the kids.”

But then Kate complained that Jon wasn't home for her birthday because he decided to stay on the snowboarding slopes at Park City.

Jon justified his decision by saying he went there to help handicapped children, while Kate said she was sad.

However, it turned out that TLC arranged for a trip for Kate and her children to Baltimore to see the cake bakers from “Ace Of Cakes,” another reality series.

The show seemed to set up a format with each parent spending time with their eight children, but apart from each other.

The first footage was apparently shot in late March, at least one month before US Weekly reported Jon's alleged affair with Reading school teacher Deanna Hummel.

Kate Gosselin then went to California on a book tour in April, without Jon.

Many scenes featured the couple on a couch, with one child propped between the couple.

But clearly, the adult Gosselins were leading separate lives before tabloids made their lives "hell," as Kate Gosselin said.

But there's more -- Carradine, who was also a musician, released a song on his website called Big Mack Truck, about a man who considers ending his life by walking into traffic. Here are some of the lyrics:

Does anyone know where I'm going ... does anyone here really care?

Ford auto sales best in ten months

GM: General Motors (GMGMQ) announced the sale of its Hummer truck brand one day after it filed for bankruptcy protection, bringing an end to an era for the automaker.

The bankruptcy is seen as necessary by lawmakers who say the industry requires a broad overhaul. GM's bankruptcy will result in 20,000 job losses and the closure of 12 plants.

GM is now trading under the symbol GMGMQ, as of Tuesday. It will be removed from the S&P 500 at the close of trading Tuesday and is also being kicked out of the Dow. Cisco Systems (CSCO, Fortune 500) takes its place starting Monday.

In other auto sector news, Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500) said Tuesday that May auto sales fell 24%, versus forecasts for a drop of 28.5%. The results nonetheless marked the best monthly performance for the company since last July.

Other automakers are also releasing monthly sales results throughout the day.

Meanwhile Ford Motor Co.'s U.S. auto sales fell less than expected in May marking its best performance since July 2008, the automaker reported on Tuesday.

Ford (F, Fortune 500) said total domestic vehicle sales fell 24.3% compared to a year earlier. That was a narrower decline than the Edmunds.com analysts' forecast of a 28.5% drop and better than the 32% retreat in April.

Though Ford's car models fell by 25.5%, sales of its mid-sized Fusion model were actually up 9.4% last month, the only model that rose from last year.

Crossover SUV sales dropped 9%, and traditional SUV sales tanked 37.4%. Overall, Ford truck sales fell 23.4%.

Peter G. Peterson Foundation

on Tuesday, June 2, 2009

President Obama will be hosting a summit on “fiscal responsibility” this week. The exact purpose of such a summit at a time when the world economy is collapsing from a decade of financial irresponsibility is not clear. However, one name on the guest list does stand out: Peter G. Peterson.

Those who follow debates on budget issues closely have probably heard of Peter G. Peterson. Mr. Peterson has been a prominent figure weighing in on budget debates for close to two decades.

Mr. Peterson was the Commerce Secretary in the Nixon administration. He then went on to make billions of dollars as one of the top executives at the Blackstone Group, a private equity fund. Mr. Peterson is known as one of the top beneficiaries of the fund managers’ tax break, through which he personally pocketed tens of millions of dollars.

Mr. Peterson has never been shy about using his Wall Street wealth to try to cut Social Security and Medicare, and he recently stepped up his efforts. Last year he spent $1 billion to endow the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, which seems to have destroying these programs at the top of its agenda. (Mr. Peterson also has a think tank named after him, the Peter G. Peterson Institute for International Economics.)

Peterson’s main story is that these programs are bankrupting the government and will impose an unbearable burden on future generations. Of course, the reality is that we have a broken health care system. The projections of scary budget deficits that Peterson’s crew constantly cites is based almost entirely on projections of exploding health care costs. If the United States can get its health care system in order, as every other country has done, then we would be projecting enormous budget surpluses as far as the eye can see.

It is remarkable that the Peterson crew can continue to whine about generation inequality even after we just saw the most enormous redistribution from older generations to younger generations in the history of the world. The $8 trillion in wealth lost in the collapse of the housing bubble was mostly held by older workers and retirees. The $7 trillion lost in the stock market collapse was also primarily held by older workers and retirees.

The beneficiaries of these huge price declines will be younger workers, and those yet to enter the labor force, who will be able to buy homes and stock at prices far lower than they would have paid just two years ago. This huge generational redistribution would cause serious economists to change their view of inter-generational fairness. After all, how much money do they think the baby boom cohort should be forced to surrender?

However, this massive redistribution from older generations to younger ones has just caused the Peterson crew to redouble their efforts. After all, the Peterson crew somehow couldn’t see an $8 trillion housing bubble as it was growing. Why should they pay any attention to it now, just because its collapse has thrown the world economy into the worst downturn since the Great Depression?

Unfortunately, instead of being subject to the ridicule they so richly deserve, the Peterson crew is treated reverentially by the media. Ostensibly serious news outlets suspend normal journalistic practices in discussing the Peterson gang.

This deference is best evidenced by the way the Peterson Foundation is described in news stories. Instead of describing the Peterson Foundation by its political leanings, in a recent article the Washington Post characterized the Foundation as an organization that “advocates for federal fiscal responsibility.” The New York Times described the Foundation as having been “formed to raise awareness about the nation’s economic challenges.”

Every organization has boilerplate wording that describe its mission. (The Center for Economic and Policy Research “was established in 1999 to promote democratic debate on the most important economic and social issues that affect people’s lives.”) News outlets never use these descriptions in their coverage – except in the case of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation.

The public would be right to be outraged that a Wall Street billionaire is trying to take away the core social insurance programs that they will be dependent on in their old age. It was the Wall Street crew that wrecked the economy, costing millions of people their jobs and tens of millions their life savings. Now Peterson wants to use much of his Wall Street winnings to take away the only source of support that tens of millions of retirees have left.

But no one expects ethical behavior from Wall Street tycoons. The public does expect a little more from the media. The people who report on budget issues should be able to step back and assess the issues themselves rather than just parrot the lines that the Peterson Foundation has fed them. And they should be able to sufficiently contain their enthusiasm for Peterson’s quest that they describe his Foundation in the same sort of language they use to describe the other actors involved in this debate.

Heidi and Spencer Try to Quit I'm a Celebrity

Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag may or may not believe they are celebrities, but they definitely want out.

The duo tried to quit NBC's I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! the very first day they arrived in Costa Rica to shoot the "C-listers in distress" reality show, which premieres Monday.

"They wanted to be treated like stars," a high-level source on the series tells E! News' Ryan Seacrest. "[Spencer] literally thought he and Heidi were staying in a Four Seasons, working out and getting a tan."

The two refused to eat the same food as the rest of the cast, and complained about being teamed with low-wattage stars, among them former model/reality-show queen Janice Dickinson, actors Stephen Baldwin and Lou Diamond Phillips, former NBA star John Salley and American Idol castoff Sanjaya Malakar. An NBC exec had to coax the newlyweds to remain on board.

"I wish they got some real celebrities like K-Fed," groused Montag, per the network insider.

We can just imagine the producers are thinking the same thing.

Borat Lands On Eminem`s Face, Butt First

Poor Eminem got the bad end of this poor maneuvering/publicity stunt/some rope guy sleeping on his job at tonight’s MTV Movie Awards. You can tell by the look on Marshall’s face that he was not feeling it. Sitting from home, the joke seemed just as unfunny. Fail.

The ‘We Made You’ rapper was seen mouthing “are you f***ing serious” when Sacha’s alter-ego Bruno, a gay Austrian fashion reporter, descended from the roof of the Gibson Amphitheatre - in Universal City, California - wearing wings, knee high boots and a jockstrap.

Bruno then wrapped his legs around Eminem’s head, with his buttocks fully exposed and asked: “Is the real Slim Shady about to stand up?” The ‘Stan’ hitmaker appeared to be visibly upset by the encounter and after members of his entourage pulled Bruno off him, he left his seat and exited the building.

Before the incident, Eminem had wowed the audience by performing tracks ‘We Made You’ and ‘Crack A Bottle’ from his new album ‘Relapse’. The big winner of the night was teen vampire movie ‘Twilight’, which picked up five awards including Best Movie.

Airbus A330 disappears over Atlantic

An Air France jet carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris has disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean, according to news reports.

The plane is said to have run into a thunderstorm and chief Air France spokesman Francois Brousse said that "it is possible" that lightning struck the plane, according to an Associated Press report out of Sao Paulo.

Officials are assuming the worst.

Air France-KLM CEO Pierre-Henri Gourgeon has said that "We are without doubt facing an air catastrophe . . . At this time, the plane's fuel reserves would not permit it to still be in flight."

Fast Facts:
Flight number: Air France flight 447
Plane type: Airbus A330-200
Engines: General Electric CF6-80E
Capacity: 253 passengers
On board: 216 passengers (126 men, 82 women, 7 children and one infant), 12 crew (3 pilots and 9 flight attendants)
Departure: Rio, 7 p.m. local time (2200 GMT)
Scheduled arrival: 0915 GMT (2:15 a.m. Seattle time)

Aircraft flight hours: 18,870
Entered service: April 18, 2005
Last maintenance check: April 16, 2009, in the hangar

Pilot records:
Captain: 11,000 flight hours, including 1,700 hours on Airbus A330/A340s
First officer: 3,000 flight hours (800 of which on the Airbus A330/A340)
First officer: 6,600 flight hours (2,600 on the Airbus A330/A340)

(Sources: AP, Air France, Airbus)

The A330 has a good safety record.

"Since the A330 was built, there have been four whole losses, and that's where the plane is totaled, so to speak," said Emily McGee, spokeswoman for the Flight Safety Foundation.

One of the losses was during flight test in June 1994, and seven people were killed, according to data compiled by the Aviation Safety Network.

Two others were because of an attack by Tamil Tiger rebels at Colombo-Bandaranayake International Airport. Two SriLankan Airlines' Airbus A330 planes were destroyed.

In 2000, a Malaysia Airlines flight had just arrived from Beijing when 80 canisters of oxalyl chloride leaked, damaging the A330 aircraft beyond repair.

It is possible to lose contact with an aircraft and have the passengers be O.K., but that is probably not the case with the missing Air France plane, McGee said.

"You've got transponders that should be reflecting the location of the airplane to the controllers," she said. "There are also dead areas just with the curvature of the Earth, but everyone knows where those are. . . . Everyone's just making a lot of assumptions right now. I think it's safe to say we've all assumed the plane has crashed."

More details are available from this Associated Press report:

About four hours (after takeoff), the plane sent an automatic signal indicating electrical problems while going through strong turbulence, Air France said.

The plane "crossed through a thunderous zone with strong turbulence" at 0200 GMT Monday (10 p.m. EDT Sunday). An automatic message was received 14 minutes later "signaling electrical circuit malfunction."

Brazil's Air Force said the last contact it had with the Air France jet was at 0136 GMT (9:30 p.m. EDT Sunday), but did not say where the plane was then.

Brazil's air force was searching near the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, about 300 kilometers (180 miles) northeast of the coastal city of Natal, a spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with department policy.

...

If all 228 people were killed, it would be the deadliest commercial airline disaster since Nov. 12, 2001, when an American Airlines jetliner crashed in the New York City borough of Queens during a flight to the Dominican Republic, killing 265 people.

Left 4 Dead 2 due November 17

Last week, Valve offered a brief teaser announcement that it would be party to the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, sparking waves of speculation as to what, exactly, the Half-Life 2 maker would have on hand to show. As part of Microsoft's E3 press conference today, the answer to that question surfaced when the publisher showed the first trailer for Left 4 Dead 2.

According to the brief trailer shown among a litany of other games arriving exclusively for Microsoft's platforms, Left 4 Dead 2 is expected to arrive on the Xbox 360 and PC on November 17. The brief trailer also showed survivors battling hordes zombies on a bridge, featuring the new chainsaw weapon.

As part of the 2009 Game Developers Conference in March, Valve said that the PC and Xbox 360 editions of the Turtle Rock Studios-developed Left 4 Dead have combined to sell more than 2.5 million units at retail worldwide. That number does not include sales through Valve's online distribution platform Steam, a statistic that the publisher traditionally keeps under its hat. However, Valve founder Gabe Newell revealed in February that during a one-weekend-only half-off sale through Steam, Left 4 Dead sales skyrocketed 3,000 percent.

Susan Boyle Soars With Final Performance

The world was fixated on the final "Britain's Got Talent" Saturday (May 30), mainly to see how the unlikely overnight sensation Susan Boyle, who has been battered by the media in the wake of last week's shaky performance on the show would fare. She did not disappoint her fans, who, judging by the amount of traffic clogging the show's Web site, were flocking to their computers to see her performance — but ultimately came in second, losing out to dance troupe Diversity. The 10-member British troupe will receive 100,000 pounds ($160,000) and will perform at the Royal Variety Performance before the Queen.

After the performance, the show's hosts acknowledged the pressure Boyle has been under this week, to which she said: "I want to thank the people for all the support they've given me, especially the people at home and people in the audience. Thank you all very much."

Asked if it was worth it, she replied, "Well worth it! Well worth it! To hell with everything!" Asked if she feels at home onstage, she said, "I really feel at home onstage, of course I do, I'm among friends am I not?" she asked, looking straight into the crowd.

Judge Piers Morgan, who commented extensively on Boyle's hardships last week, even citing negative headlines before saying, "I thought, all you have to do to answer all your critics... is sing the song we all fell in love with, sing it better than you did last time, and Susan, I'm not supposed to favor anyone in this competition as a judge, but forget it, that was the greatest performance I've seen in 'Britain's Got Talent' history, you should win this competition, I loved it!" Boyle grimaced slightly and put her hand over her face.

Judge Amanda Holden seconded his praise, adding that "Simon [Cowell] had a tear in his eye, and I've never seen that before."

For his part, Cowell referred to her "weird seven weeks" and said, "You had every right to walk away from this ... and a lot of people said you shouldn't even be in this competition, that you're not equipped to deal with it. For what? For you to sit at home with your cat and say 'I've missed an opportunity'? I completely disagree with that. Win or lose, you had the guts to come back here tonight and face your critics, and you beat them. And that's the most important thing. Whatever happens, and I've got to know the real Susan Boyle, who is not the person I've seen portrayed in the media, you can walk away from this, win or lose, with your head held high. I absolutely adore you."

When Diversity were announced as winners, Boyle put on a brave face, saying, "The best people won," and she wished them "all the best."

The President Has a Date

The Obamas escaped Washington on Saturday in search of a quintessential New York evening dinner and a Broadway show.

Along Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan,
people waved as the Obamas’ limousine passed.

They found it at Blue Hill, a low-key Greenwich Village restaurant, and at the Belasco Theater near Times Square for a performance of “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” the Tony-nominated August Wilson play.

It was the Obamas’ first joint visit to the city as the first couple. And even cooler-than-thou New York allowed itself a bit of excitement over their arrival.

“I thought I was dreaming,” said Kecia McCowen, a 45-year-old utility worker and student from Brooklyn; she bought tickets for the show three days ago, but found out that the Obamas would be there only after she arrived. “I was like, stop playing!”

Along Avenue of the Americas, pedestrians stopped to wave, snap pictures and press against metal barricades as the Obamas’ motorcade zipped by.

Times Square was even more frenetic than usual, as throngs of pedestrians — certainly including many tourists — lined several blocks waiting to catch a glimpse of Mr. and Mrs. Obama. The presidential date night began with a late-afternoon flight from Andrews Air Force Base, with Mr. Obama wearing a dark blue suit (no tie), and Mrs. Obama a black cocktail dress and a sleek updo, holding a turquoise clutch.

They landed at Kennedy International Airport at 4:45 p.m. and after taking a quick helicopter ride to Lower Manhattan, the presidential motorcade snaked its way up to Blue Hill, a restaurant off Washington Square Park that specializes in cuisine from the Hudson Valley. (It sounded like the choice of Mrs. Obama, who favors local food.)

Hours before the show began, the Secret Service cordoned off the entire block of 44th Street between Avenue of the Americas and Broadway, where the Belasco is located. Outside the theater, as the actors in the play began to trickle in, one of them, Chad L. Coleman, signed autographs and spoke with reporters, wearing a broad smile and an Obama cap.

“There are no words for it,” he said. “I told people I got two in one: a Broadway debut and the president attending.”

Ernie Hudson, one of the show’s stars, insisted that the cast did not have butterflies.

“We’re all very excited,” he said. “You really can’t do anything differently. You always do your best show possible.”

The Obamas arrived at the theater in a black stretch limousine just before 8 p.m., but lines at the metal detectors delayed the show more than 45 minutes.

When the Obamas walked down the aisle to take their seats, “it was utter pandemonium,” said Tim Johnson, who was in the audience, and described a scene of shouting, clapping and a long standing ovation.

Meryl Streep sat a few rows in front of the Obamas, said Mr. Johnson, 52. “No one seemed to notice,” he said.

About 11:30 p.m. , the Obamas emerged from the theater. The president waved to a crowd waiting outside, and shook the hand of Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly.

While the Obamas’ visit to New York was considered private, there was some very public criticism of the trip. In a press release that was issued on Saturday afternoon with the headline “Putting on a Show,” the Republican National Committee suggested that the outing was inappropriate and that Mr. Obama was out of touch, especially given the looming bankruptcy of General Motors.

Shortly afterward, a White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, quickly relayed a message to reporters from Mr. Obama.

“I am taking my wife to New York City,” the president said in the statement, “because I promised her during the campaign that I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished.”

Israeli day parade 2009

Israeli day parade 2009, Israeli Day Parade, also known as the Salute to Israel Parade, is an annual parade held in New York City each summer to celebrate the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.

The parade is billed by the organizers as the largest meeting of people in support of the nation of Israel in the world.

A typical Salute to Israel will include floats, marching bands, and various other participants parading 100,000 strong up Fith Avenue to the delight of some 1 million spectators.

New York Salute to Israel Parade

This year, the parade up Fifth Avenue is scheduled for Sunday May 31, 2009.

The parade has been an annual event in New York since its first year in 1964. It draws people of all ages from Jewish schools and synagogues, and a variety of other organizations.

The organization does not, however, draw much support from the actual Israeli community of New York, which stands at roughly one and a half million people.

Of course, a parade in support of the nation of Israel inevitably draws criticism and protests of a political nature. An annual accompaniment to the New York Salute to Israel Parade is the Palestinian protest, which consists of Palestinians and their various supporters.

Despite the protests, the parade is a chance for the New York Jewish community to show their pride and support, and the Israeli Day Parade is a fantastic event bringing together a diverse and festive group of people every summer, and should not be missed.

London UK Salute to Israel Parade

In 2008, the first ever UK Salute to Israel Parade was held in London and Manchester, which was similar in format and message to the original New York event. The UK Salute to Israel Parade drew an amazing forty five thousand people, and will likely become an annual event just like the New York original.

Diversity win Britain's Got Talent

Street dance troupe Diversity said on Sunday it was still in shock after beating runaway favorite and Internet sensation Susan Boyle in the final of the popular "Britain's Got Talent" television contest.

Boyle, 48, had been heavily backed to beat nine other finalists late on Saturday after clips of her first appearance on the show in April were downloaded nearly 200 million times and she was hailed the world over as a superstar.

The Scottish spinster who joked she had never been kissed and who challenged people's notion of what a celebrity should be came second behind Diversity in a final which attracted a peak audience of 19.2 million people in Britain.

Although the average viewing figure will be lower, at its peak the ITV show commanded 72 percent of the total television audience.

Nearly four million people phoned in to choose a winner, and Diversity won 24.9 percent of the vote ahead of Boyle's 20.2 percent. Saxophonist Julian Smith was third with 16.4 percent.

The 11 dancers, led and choreographed by 20-year-old Ashley Banjo, had been the bookmakers' sixth favorite to win before the show, and said on Sunday the result was still sinking in.

"I think I fell over," said Banjo. Diversity comprises three sets of brothers and friends aged between 13 and 25.

"I had my speech ready, you know, 'Well done Susan'," he told a news conference.

"Then they said 'Diversity', and honestly, my legs actually gave way. I'm really tall and there's a long way to fall. I hit the floor and honestly words can't describe how I felt."

Perry Kiely, who at 13 is the joint-youngest member of the troupe formed two years ago, said he was "gobsmacked."

Diversity wins 100,000 pounds ($160,000) and will appear at the Royal Variety Performance before the Queen.

HOW TO MAKE MONEY

How Diversity, and Britain's Got Talent judge Simon Cowell, turn the success into cash remains to be seen.

Boyle's financial future is seen as secure despite coming second, as Cowell and his Syco music label are widely expected to sign her up for an album and there is talk of a Hollywood movie being made about her story.

"I don't think a street dance group, especially from the UK, has really come as far as we have," Banjo said.

"So I think there's really a chance that ... we can almost create our own path. However he (Cowell) wants to make money out of us he can do it, I suppose."

Banjo said Boyle had been gracious in defeat.

"She was so gracious about it, she said the best act won and behind (stage) she said she saw something special," he said.

"She was so nice about it. She has a great career. She's going to do really well anyway."

Despite expectations that Boyle will make a fortune from her fame and talent, there has been concern in the media and among show organizers about her ability to cope with pressure.

Boyle, who was starved of oxygen at birth leading to minor brain damage, has been pursued by the world's press since early April and, according to show judge Piers Morgan, broke down in tears repeatedly during the run-up to the final.

At one point she threatened to quit Britain's Got Talent, but showed few nerves as she sang "I Dreamed a Dream."

"You can walk away from this, win or lose, with your head held high, Susan," Cowell told her on the night.

Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

The only full marathon in San Diego was designed to be entertaining for the participants and the spectators. Twenty-six stages planted across the course will feature 42 bands throughout the morning and into the afternoon.

The run is a people-watcher's dream. About 165,000 spectators typically watch the race, which begins on the west side of Balboa Park and meanders through downtown before cutting through Mission Valley and around Mission Bay. The race ends at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.

Some 40 cheerleading squads will be in costume and have themed floats as part of a local competition. But often it's the runners who amuse the observers. Event planner Kari Logan said the race often attracts several Running Elvises, and one year there was a runner who carried a surfboard the entire trip. Descriptions of some of the runners' outfits are better left out of a family newspaper.
